WCC Nurse Practitioners Memorandum - October 15, 2001

MEMORANDUM NO. 2001-08

TO: Commissioners, District Administrators, Self-Insureds, Insurance Carriers, Attorneys, Unions, Medical Practitioners, and Advisory Board Members
FROM: John A. Mastropietro, Chairman
DATE: October 15, 2001
RE: Nurse Practitioners

Public Act 99-168, now codified as §20-87a, provides for a category of nurses who may engage in "Advance Nursing Practice". The question has arisen as to whether an Advance Nurse Practitioner's signature is legally sufficient to effect a valid Form 36. We believe that an Advance Nurse Practitioner's signature is valid and may be accepted provided it is co-signed by the physician with whom the nurse is working in collaboration.
